Originally titled Cinemagoing the first edition of this report was published in September1989. This is the 30th anniversay edition.

UK & Ireland

UK cinema admissions in 2018 were the highest since 1970 but the year also saw the first drop in average ticket prices for at least 25 years. In another first all the top 20 films of the year were distributed by local subsidiaries of the Hollywood studios for the first time ever. Alongside widespread discounting, both as a result of unlimited cards and slashed prices at underperforming sites, there is huge investment in refitting cinemas with recliner seating as well as new technologies such as motion seats, large format screens and upgraded sound systems.

These conflicting trends are reviewed in this latest edition which, as ever, includes data on film production and distribution, trends in cinema numbers and revenues, and  detailed financial data covering the leading cinema chains. Five year forecasts of screen numbers, admissions and box office complete the package.
